Historical Bookkeeping: 2025, Volume II

One of the less-fun parts of being the historical record is that, with close to 60,000 telecasts and more than 157,000 announcer credits in our five main listings, sometimes it becomes necessary to correct the historical record.

We do this eight times a year for a couple of reasons. The first is regularity: it batches everything together to make sure things don't back up and helps avoid the "did I make that change or not?" problem. The other is a certain level of fairness: when these things happen on schedule, it eliminates the possibility of villainy by sending in one correction at a time to manipulate when one announcer catches or passes another. (That would redefine the level of "petty" necessary to constitute petty crime, but while your editor cannot claim to have laid awake at night thinking about this, it has crossed his mind.)

We settled on the eight-update schedule for a couple of reasons. In terms of frequency, doing this biweekly or monthly was more frequent than practical, and doing it quarterly felt a little bit like opening a dam of minnows. In terms of schedule, some things just fit: the traditional "quarters" at the ends of March and September bookend the MLB season; the end of December lines up with several programs' desires to autofill the current year in a date entry; the cross-quarter days in mid-February and mid-November line up with the ends of the baseball and football playoffs, respectively; the one in mid-May corresponds to the funneling of basketball and hockey playoffs from a firehose down to a stream; and mid-August is jut before football ramps up at the NFL, college and high school levels.

Before we move from the "why" to the "what," here are some ways to send in updates to the announcer listings, which live on the 506 Sports archive:

  • The first and probably simplest way is to post on the 506 Sports Discord server, which has thousands of members with various sports broadcasting interests and a few dozen active members in the Archive section.
  • There's also the option to contact our editor directly: this site hangs out on Twitter/X, Instagram, and Bluesky.
  • You can email us by properly arranging "Tony" and an "@" sign in front of our domain name. Don't include the "blog" prefix if you do this, or we won't get it.
Having established the ground rules, here are the changes we made to various historical listings. These changes were made on April 8, 2025, and the current listings reflect games played through Sunday, April 6.
